HOLY LAND - SYRIA [curse: of idol moon: sharia imperialism saudi] This is what the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Fouad Twal underlines in a "Letter of solidarity for the suffering in Syria" written on January 24 last. He says that the Syrian people are living "the tragedy of the Cross" and can only find light in "Our Lord." Joining to Benedict XVI, the Patriarch calls for the "cessation of all violence" and "the courage of dialogue and negotiation."

HOLY LAND - SYRIA [curse: of idol moon: sharia imperialism saudi] In one year, about 600 thousand Syrians - including tens of thousands of Christians - have crossed the borders with Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan. In the latter there are more than 300 thousand refugees. The country has responded by creating camps equipped enough for less than half of the people. According to government figures, at least two thousand refugees have crossed the border in recent weeks. To welcome them and give aid and comfort, are the Comboni Sisters among others, who are working in particular way to help many pregnant women or mothers of young children (see AsiaNews 23/01/2013 Comboni Sisters aid 10 thousand Syrian refugees in the Jordanian desert). To them, as well as all the Christian victims of the war, the Patriarch of Jerusalem launches this appeal for solidarity and spiritual closeness.

We are aware that Syria and its people are living in this tragic hour the drama of the Cross that can find light only in the Cross and Passion of our Lord. HOLY LAND - SYRIA [curse: of idol moon: sharia imperialism saudi] as I could feel during my recent pastoral visit to Mafraq in northern Jordan - and cannot leave us indifferent. So long, too long this situation continues. Our greatest humiliation and suffering lies in feeling powerless and unable to intervene to immediately put an end to the violence and to further help the victims. Our appeal for cessation of all violence, and to arm ourselves instead with mercy, mercy and compassion towards our suffering Syrian brethren, and to join with the Holy Father, Benedict XVI continuing to ask, along with him, the prayer for peace so that "in the various conflicts, the ignoble massacres of unarmed civilians cease, that all violence would end, and that we find the courage for dialogue and negotiation".

EGYPT [nazi islamist: imperialism saudi arabia]. Young Egyptian leader calls on West to back anti-Islamist struggle. On the second anniversary of the Jasmine Revolution, millions of young people demonstrate across the country against the government led by the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafists. Since the fall of the Mubarak regime, nothing has changed. For Nagui Damian, a young Coptic leader, people are ready for anything to make their voice heard. There are fears that people might clash, even violently, with police. Cairo (AsiaNews) - "Western nations must back our demands and support our struggle against Islamists," said Nagui Damian, a young Coptic Catholic leader of the Revolution, who spoke to AsiaNews about Egypt's tense situation.

EGYPT [nazi islamist: imperialism saudi arabia] "The Muslim Brotherhood does not care about the common good, only about power. Millions of Egyptians are protesting today across the country to show the world that the Jasmine Revolution is alive, that it did not end with Mubarak's fall." Indeed, "People want real democratic change in the country and are willing to do anything to get it," he explained, but "We are afraid of clashes, even violent ones, with police." In fact, elections and two referendums characterised by vote rigging and discrimination are not enough to make Egypt a democratic country. For that goal, thousands of people have gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square and in Heliopolis, where the presidential palace is located. Other demonstrations are expected in other parts of the city like Helwan, Shubra, al-Zawaya, Imbaba and Mostafa Mahmoud Square.

EGYPT [nazi islamist: imperialism saudi arabia] More demonstrations are also planned for Alexandria, Assuit, Port Saud, Suez, Sharqiya, Kafr al-Sheikh, he added. To avoid tensions, the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafists will not hold back their members. Instead, they have decided to mark the anniversary with a populist action, launching a campaign to promote health, offering people free hospital checkups. For the young Copt, Islamists are aware that they are losing popular appeal. "In two years, our demands have been unheeded," he said. "In the media, Islamists describe Egypt as a democratic country, but in reality they silence anyone who tries to criticise them." A case in point is the Sharia-based constitution, approved in a "phoney" referendum that Islamists won thanks to clerical propaganda in rural mosques where more than half of the population is illiterate.

EGYPT [nazi islamist: imperialism saudi arabia] For Nagui Damian, "Islamists fear culture. For this reason, they are trying to discredit young revolutionaries." What is more, "They have deliberately obfuscated the real content of the constitution, which still cannot be found in print in bookstores and libraries. Anyone who wants to buy a copy must rely on unofficial editions without the government seal." For the young man, this is one of the many examples of bad governance by the Muslim Brotherhood. On the one hand, they want to be everything to everybody. On the other, "During the trials of those responsible for the massacres at the Maspero building and Mohammed Mahmoud Street, none of the accused, mostly military, has been convicted. Meanwhile, Salafists who continue to attack Christian villages in Upper Egypt enjoy impunity."

EGYPT [nazi islamist: imperialism saudi arabia] In light of the situation, Nagui Damian wants Western democracies to remain engaged in Egypt and help the thousands of young Egyptians willing to sacrifice their life to achieve a country that respects human rights and religious freedom and pays attention to the needs of the people. Sadly, "The West believes in a process of change that does not fit reality," he laments. "Morsi's speeches on working with the opposition are pure propaganda meant to deceive Europe and the United States in order to get money from them." (S.C.)

TERRA SANTA - SIRIA

Mons. Fouad Twal, Patriarca Latino,
A nome dell'AOCTS

HOLY LAND - SYRIA
Patriarch of Jerusalem, close to the Syrian Christian victims of war
Archbishop Fouad Twal expresses appreciation for the work of those who seek to alleviate the suffering of refugees. In his "Letter of solidarity," he adds his voice to Benedict XVI, for the "cessation of all violence." And hope that the warring parties have, "the courage of dialogue and negotiation."

Jerusalem (AsiaNews) - Spiritual closeness and prayer for those who lend "generous service" to the poor, sick and needy, and "appreciation" for the testimony of " fraternal charity". This is what the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Fouad Twal underlines in a "Letter of solidarity for the suffering in Syria" written on January 24 last. He says that the Syrian people are living "the tragedy of the Cross" and can only find light in "Our Lord." Joining to Benedict XVI, the Patriarch calls for the "cessation of all violence" and "the courage of dialogue and negotiation."
In one year, about 600 thousand Syrians - including tens of thousands of Christians - have crossed the borders with Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan.
To all the religious communities, all the priests, all those who assist in Syria, risking their person, their generous service to the poor, to the suffering, the wounded, to those in need of help, we express our heartfelt spiritual closeness, our solidarity in prayer, and all our appreciation for the tireless witness of charity and fraternal concern in the midst of desolation and in such difficult circumstances.
We are aware that Syria and its people are living in this tragic hour the drama of the Cross that can find light only in the Cross and Passion of our Lord. Our voice is raised in intercession for the dead and in defense of the living, of those who continue to remain in their land and to those refugees who have lost everything and had to leave their country. The drama of one and the other is very great - as I could feel during my recent pastoral visit to Mafraq in northern Jordan - and cannot leave us indifferent.

I appeal to those who can intervene to finally facilitate a constructive dialogue, because surely there is a way out, if we have the courage and the will to undertake it for the sake of peace and not for other interests.
May the Most Holy Mary intercede with her Son for these intentions.

Asylums and mutilation: China’s new forms of torture
by Chen Weijun
While the central government debates whether to reform the system of "re-education through labor" cases of human rights violations multiply and worsen. The story of Chen Qingxia, wife of a mentally ill man, beaten until she lost the use of her legs as she tried to present his petition to the central government. Her husband was interned in a psychiatric hospital and her 12 year old son has disappeared into thin air.

Beijing (AsiaNews) - While the central government discusses the abolition of the system of "re-education through labor", the Chinese news reports cases of horrific human rights violations. This is confirmed by the story of Chen Qingxia (see photo), the wife of a mentally ill man who became disabled as a result of the violence suffered while trying to get justice from the central authorities over abuse. Her story was told to China National Radio and even confirmed by an official of the Department of propaganda, who, however, tried to change the details.
Chen's misfortunes began in 2003 when her husband, being treated at a psychiatric hospital, was sentenced to a labor camp (laojiao) for damaging a piece of railroad. After the conviction, the  camp refused to accommodate the man because of his psychiatric problems and brought him to the Yichun Office of Public Security - Heilongjiang - where the family lives. Chen saw several wounds on her husband's body and feared for his mental health seriously deteriorated after this trip. A few weeks later he was declared schizophrenic and committed to a psychiatric hospital, a very common practice used by the communist regime to silence dissenting voices.
From this moment, the woman has been trying to get justice from the central government through the petitions system. It is a form provided and defended by the Chinese Constitution: if any citizen believes they have been wronged by the local authorities, they may request the central government to intervene. Given the huge number of cases, the minor officials - often corrupt and deviated in the management of local justice and security - will do anything to stop those who want to bring their petition to Beijing.
In 2007, while returning from the capital, she was arrested and held in prison for 10 days in Yichun. During this detention she was badly beaten and lost the use of her legs, "My feet were fine after the visit to Beijing. While in custody they beat me and now I am not able to walk unaided." Next she was first locked up in a deserted morgue, guarded by a soldier, and then sentenced to 18 months of forced labour. Meanwhile, her son, aged 12, has disappeared into thin air. Li Nan, propaganda official in Yichun, confirmed the detention but specifies that Chen was "taking care" of 4 people in the Department of Hygiene for "humanitarian reasons".
Chen's case is part of the ongoing debate in China on the abolition of the system of "laojiao." According to rumors, the Party, led by new leader Xi Jinping, is preparing to abolish them, for othersit will only be a superficial "reform". In addition, several dissidents and analysts denounce, "without cross-checking, that can only be guaranteed by democracy, Beijing will always have the need to violate the human rights of the population. They can change the name, but will find another to define the same things."

EGYPT
Young Egyptian leader calls on West to back anti-Islamist struggle
On the second anniversary of the Jasmine Revolution, millions of young people demonstrate across the country against the government led by the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafists. Since the fall of the Mubarak regime, nothing has changed. For Nagui Damian, a young Coptic leader, people are ready for anything to make their voice heard. There are fears that people might clash, even violently, with police.

Cairo (AsiaNews) - "Western nations must back our demands and support our struggle against Islamists," said Nagui Damian, a young Coptic Catholic leader of the Revolution, who spoke to AsiaNewsabout Egypt's tense situation.
"The Muslim Brotherhood does not care about the common good, only about power. Millions of Egyptians are protesting today across the country to show the world that the Jasmine Revolution is alive, that it did not end with Mubarak's fall."
Indeed, "People want real democratic change in the country and are willing to do anything to get it," he explained, but "We are afraid of clashes, even violent ones, with police."
In fact, elections and two referendums characterised by vote rigging and discrimination are not enough to make Egypt a democratic country.
More demonstrations are also planned for Alexandria, Assuit, Port Saud, Suez, Sharqiya, Kafr al-Sheikh, he added.
"In the media, Islamists describe Egypt as a democratic country, but in reality they silence anyone who tries to criticise them."
A case in point is the Sharia-based constitution, approved in a "phoney" referendum that Islamists won thanks to clerical propaganda in rural mosques where more than half of the population is illiterate.
For Nagui Damian, "Islamists fear culture. For this reason, they are trying to discredit young revolutionaries."
What is more, "They have deliberately obfuscated the real content of the constitution, which still cannot be found in print in bookstores and libraries.
Meanwhile, Salafists who continue to attackChristian villages in Upper Egypt enjoy impunity."
In light of the situation, Nagui Damian wants Western democracies to remain engaged in Egypt and help the thousands of young Egyptians willing to sacrifice their life to achieve a country that respects human rights and religious freedom and pays attention to the needs of the people.
Sadly, "The West believes in a process of change that does not fit reality," he laments. "Morsi's speeches on working with the opposition are pure propaganda meant to deceive Europe and the United States in order to get money from them." (S.C.)

EGITTO

CHINA-JAPAN
Xi Jinping chooses dialogue with Tokyo over Senkaku / Diaoyu
by Wang Zhicheng
Xi is also thinking of a high-level summit to resolve the dispute, modelled on the meeting between Zhu Enlai and Tanaka in 1972. But in China there are sections of the population inflamed with patriotism and leaders who want Beijing’s total supremacy in the China Sea.

Beijing (AsiaNews) - The General Secretary of the Communist Party, Xi Jinping, is extending a hand for dialogue to resolve tensions with Tokyo over sovereignty of the Senkaku / Diaoyu islands. He has also suggested the possibility of a high-level summit between the two countries if there is "the right atmosphere".
Xi spoke of dialogue during his meeting yesterday with Natsuo Yamaguchi, a special envoy of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Yamaguchi presented Xi a letter written by Abe in which he calls for more dialogue between Tokyo and Beijing.

Given the high tension between the two countries in recent months, some analysts doubted that Xi Jinping would meet the envoy. Instead, almost at the end of Yamaguchi's visit, Xi received him, taking the letter from his hands (see photo).
The important gesture of openness - the highest level meeting between the leaders of the two countries since tensions increased - was confirmed by Yamaguchi to reporters, who said that Xi " seriously considered "the possibility of a summit as soon as the necessary conditions are created. The minutes of the meeting reported by Xinhua, however, make no mention of this. But it reports Xi's words noting that Yamaguchi's visit comes "in a time when the Sino-Japanese relations are faced with a particular situation" and reiterates that China gives "great importance" to them.
Xi also asked that there be - according to Xinhua - "political wisdom, as was the case with older generations of leaders of the two countries, to overcome the difficulties and to continue the relations."
The mention of the "older generation" is a reference to Zhou Enlai, who in 1972 he met with Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka, stressing the need to resolve the dispute.
Xi's extended hand collides with a fiery patriotism in many sectors of the Chinese population - which in recent months has targeted and destroyed some Japanese properties in China, also attacking the embassy car - and the claims of the leadership eager to assert the supremacy of Beijing in the South China Sea.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement immediately after the meeting between Xi and Yamaguchi, which states that "Japan has to deal with its history and deeds, to take concrete steps and work hard with China to find effective and appropriate ways to resolve the issue through dialogue and consultation. "
In recent days, Shinzo Abe toured Southeast Asia to build alliances with other countries that have territorial issues with China, also receiving the explicit support from the United States.

Egypt, clashes between police and demonstrators: 12 dead and nearly 500 injured
It is the second anniversary of the Jasmine Revolution. The most serious clashes in Suez, where the army blocked the entrance to the channel. President Mohamed Morsi threatens to use an iron fist against the perpetrators of violence. Port Said in flames after the verdict on the massacre of supporters of the February 2, 2012. Police barracks attacked.

Cairo (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The toll from riots marking the Egyptian Jasmine Revolution now stands at 12 dead and nearly 500 people injured. Yesterday, hundreds of thousands of people protested in major Egyptian cities - Cairo, Alexandria, Assuit, Port Said, Suez, Sharqiya, Kafr al-Sheikh - calling for the end of the Islamist establishment and a true democracy. The most serious clashes took place in Suez, where eight people were killed. Later in the evening the army blocked the city, deploying troops to the channel.
According to witnesses, the police fired first rubber bullets, then live ammunition into a crowd trying to break into the headquarters of the regional governor. Among the victims: a woman, a boy of 15 and two policemen. Violent clashes also took place in Cairo, Alexandria, Ismailiya. In the capital, police and demonstrators clashed near Tahrir Square. Police did not even spare the religious buildings as they chased protesters, which remained open to provide shelter and care for the wounded.
A Qasr al-Aini street, police fired tear gas into the local evangelical church, poisoning many people. "The police targeted the church - says Nermeen a young protester - they shot down six candelabras in the nave, where we were taking care of many affected by smoke inhalation from tear gas." In Ismailiya (Suez), the demonstrators set fire to the local headquarters of the Freedom and Justice Party (PLJ), of the Muslim Brotherhood, invading the seat of the government. Public buildings were attacked in Damietta (Nile Delta) and Kafr el-Sheikh (Red Sea).
In a short message to the nation published on Facebook and Twitter, President Mohamed Morsi has vowed to "restore order in a country divided by political unrest." The Islamist leader has threatened to use an iron fist against the perpetrators of violence: "The security forces will pursue them all over the country to bring them to justice. They are doing their best to protect and ensure the peaceful demonstrations."
Meanwhile, the court of Port Said sentenced 21 of the 73 accused in the massacre of February 2, 2012, during the post-match clashes between the fans of the local team Al-Masry al-Alhawy and Cairo. The invasion was caused by the pitch invasion by hooligans from Al-Masry. This morning, hundreds of ultras of the local team and family members of prisoners raided some police stations. The partial toll is 11 dead, dozens injured, but there are fears of new clashes in the coming hours.
